I Just started at a new high school and they said that they had too many flute players and that i couldn't be in the band.................what am i going to do!
Find a community band in your area and join one for this season. Next season you should have seniority above new students if you decide you want to join the school band.
too many flutes to me is when they're sound overpowers the trumpets and I think that however many are in your school's band isn't even enough to do that PS: i'm soooooooooo sory you couldn't get in that's..... Horible
It doesn't not take that many good flute players to be overpowering. In all the good bands I played in (camp and university) we are always told to play quieter. I play in church orchestra now and I am loudest there over 2 trumpets, Eb horn, tenor sax, 3 violins, drums, piano and percussion.
A player with a good tone is very resonate and, well, loud.
Willowann, most of the time we try not to bring up old topics like this unless we have something really significant to add. If they've faded into the past, chances are the original poster got their help, or we did as much as we could, and it doesn't really need to be at the top of the list anymore. It's great that you're reading through old topics, as there's much to be learned there, but please try to limit the number of dead threads you pull back up.
There were 32 flutes that auditioned my freshman year for band. 4 made it into wind ensemble (there were six the year before), 27 (me being first chair) in concert band, and one didn't make it at all.
Flutes are one of the most competitive instruments, I think.
flute is definately one of the most competitive instruments. there are 25 in my band. and theres no way you are gonna get into the orchestra at regionals unless you get a perfect score. i got a 256/270 and it was a miracle i got third chair in concert band. it can be ridiculously frustrating sometimes, but the ones who love it enough to work harder than the other people will rise above and (most of the time) get what they work for.
Piano and violin are the only instruments that are more common than flute...Which means that it is indeed a VERY competitive instrument (not that ya'll weren't already aware of that!).
