Can anyone enlighten me as to the benefits of the c# trill key? My new flute has one and I have noticed that it makes several trill fingerings easier, esp. high G-A. But are there other practical uses for this key that I should know about? I thought I heard one time that it could be used for adding color to the actual c# pitch, do you just depress it alone?

When pressing alone, I don't think the C# trill key will affect anything. You can play C# by pressing nothing on a flute and by opening the C# trill key's tonehole I don't see how it would affect anything. Think of it theoretically: when playing C#/Db, you normally press the D#/Eb key and that's all. The closed toneholes when playing C#/Db that are actually important would be the trill keys (D and D#/Eb I think they are) however there is the length of tubing between the trill key toneholes and the C key as well as the thumb B key but the first open tonehole would be the C tonehole. Because the C tonehole comes before both the C# trill key tonehole which comes before the B tonehole, I think that opening the C# trill key with nothing depressed would do absolutely nothing. Here's a photo to show the basic C# trill tonehole layout:

Hope that explains it enough! -Suzie

All it does is make certain trills easier, and add to the cost and weight of your flute It's useful to have and is a great selling point if you ever decide to sell the flute in the future.

Thanks, Patrick, for motivating me to do a quick search. Here's a list of trills played via C# trill:

Thanks for the link, Suzie. Below is what I had heard regarding the c# being able to be colored more. It works! And the high G-A trill is amazing and in tune!!

"Debussy C#: The middle C# which opens Lapres-midi dune faune is often raw and hard to color. Use the C# trill while fingering B natural, and you will get a C# which is full and able to be colored without losing pitch, since the resistance of the note is increased."

I got such a great deal on this flute that the addition of the split e mechanism (which I grew up playing on and personally love), c# trill and B foot were only $107! Can you believe that??

A lot of times I play a c# with my right hand keys down, does the same thing

And wow, that's cheap!
