alternate fingering for Eb3?    18:51 on Thursday, August 14, 2008 Vote for this post Vote against this post 1 vote

Hi. I was playing my flute today (and not just today, I've been noticing it for quite a while) and I noticed when I play third octave E flat it doesn't really sound clear. It has kind of a fuzzy sound to it. All my other notes are fine so I was wondering if maybe there is an alternate fingering that might help. If not, is there anything I can do to fix it? Maybe it's something that I'm doing wrong? What do you suggest? Thanks so much!

All(ALL)fingers down....

Thumb - 11234 - 123 - Eb.

That is the standard fingering, and it is not a problem note.

Woops! You don't need to put your left first finger down twice. :-)

yeah, I'm putting down all the right fingers, but it still sounds very fuzzy...maybe blowing faster air? Would that help?

<Added>

I'm not new to the flute at all, this is my 4th year of playing. I know the fingerings pretty well...(or at least I hope I do, hahaha)

sounds to me like you are trying to force out a high note, a common problem...I tell all my students that you have to focus, not force, any note on the flute, you have to find the notes...now if the other high notes around the high Eb work, it might some tech issue a repair person could address...

Definitely check for leaks.. Eb3 should NOT be a hard note to get out, at all..

I'd also suggest having the flute checked for leaks. It may be that a pad has gone bad. You may be playing it outside more if you are in a US marching band and this can cause issues. It may be that the mechanism has a bad alignment issue from a loose screw or whatever. It may be that some other notes are having problems too but you just haven't played them recently.
How about the lower notes? Sometimes issues can be spotted when you try to get out the low ones. I'd try going down chromatically from low G say to low C.

Eb3 is very ez to finger. Even if it is high note. U may have a leak. Bring your flute to a repair technician.

<Added>

there is no alternate fingering for Eb3. U have to press ur fingers down, all.

Well um... When I first started playing my Eb3 was airy but then I learned it's the way your lips are. For me, the note needed more pressure between my lips. I made tham smaller and it wasn't airy anymore.
