Hi folks,

I ran across a page online that was geared toward little children learning rhythm. It had toppings and foods for subdivisions, which makes it easy(easier) for them to learn to count.

It was something like (per beat):
pie for quarter note
pineapple for triplet
apple for two 8th notes
huckleberry/watermelon for 4 16th
raspberry for an 8th and 2 16th
butterscotch for 2ths and an 8th

Has anyone come across it and can give me the url? Or know of some more? Or have their own system? I forget quintuplets, etc. and what the "words" were for that.

Thanks! I know it's a weird request...

I don't know if it the same words but there was a lady and I forget her name who published something called Blue Jello Counting Cards. I tried a quick search but only foudn a defunct site. I'm rushing out of the office and will look later. As I recall I did not like or agree with all the word choices but it is a good starting place.

My oboe teacher once said that for triplets he uses pineapple. I don`t though. I had never heard of it before him.

I like these counting systems, as I found out that my most famous teacher, who was 42 years as principal in a major symphony, used them as well...I have my students make up their own words for 1/8ths, 1/4's, triplets, etc with the equal number of syllables...

triplet = pep-er-mint, or choc-o-late, or straw-ber-ry etc
2 1/8ths= ap-ple or win-dow or car-pet etc...
4 1/16th= huck-le-ber-ry etc...
