I am so tired of playing and my flute slipping off of my lip from sweating. I fell for an engraved lip plate years ago hoping that would help... it did nothing. I've also used masking tape and postage stamps. Today I started thinking... I wonder what would happen if I put a small amount of anti-perspirant below my lip?? What do you guys think?

I do not th ink you are going to like the taste the first time you find your tongue or bottom lip touching the lip plate after it has touched your bottom lip.

Go to your local pharmacist and see if he or she will give a small sample of Anhydrous lanolin (sp?).If you can get a small sample put just a fingertip amounton your lip plate or on your chin/lip where you sort of want it to stick. If you can't get a sample you might have to purchase a pounds worth which I think is like $12USD. That amount will last a life time. You can package it in little containers and sell it to your brass player freinds as the best slide grease.

Anhydrous lanolin is what pharmacists use to make salves and ointments. The medicine is added to the lanolin; the lanolin is an inert and inactive ingredient that holds the medicine to where you want it; so it is a bit sticky and might be just what you need. And is washes off with a good soap like Dawn.

Warning/Caveats:: this is great for slide grease on brass instruments. But do not get it on your lips if you are a brass player. It is not dangerous but it is sticky enough that you will not be able to buzz for awhile. I got some on my lip accidently after grease a slide before a rehearsal and literaly could not play; could not buzz at all.

My "pure, anhydrous lanolin" is very, very sticky, like car grease. I would not want that on my lip!

I have never had a problem of my flute slipping. So I have just tried wetting my chin to make it slippery, to see what happens. My flute does not slide around while I play. I know we are not all made the same, but the area of chin that my flute rests against is slightly concave. Tis means that if I am resting it appropriately against this slight hollow the flute cannot move.

May I suggest that the way you hold your flute, or the force you exert on the keys may be inappropriate, resulting in the flute being pushed up or down on your chin with certain fingerings. The only force between your flute and your chin should be horizontal. Horizontal forces will not move the flute up or down against your chin.

Perhaps your flute is poorly adjusted so that you have to press the keys extra hard to make the pads seal?

I'm about to get on my hippie soap box... But anti-prespirant has aluminum in it, which is toxic for the body and has been linked to increased risks in contracting alzheimer's. It's a very creative idea but I think anti-prespirant is a bad thing, and I also wouldn't want to get that clogging up my embouchure hole.

I suffer from the same thing at times. I think God said, "ok Ann, we're going to put all of your sweat glands in your chin area, and plant you with the desire to play the flute. Have fun." The only thing I can do is play in a cool area and use a fan or something when needed. At least August has been cool for us

I know a few people who put postage stamps on their lip plates due to sweaty lips

I had a head joint come in with the sticky part of a post it note on the lip plate. Apparently, it worked, as the paper looked a bit worn....

How about adhesive-backed velcro - the rough, 'hooky' side.
OR sand paper... choose your grit.
LOL!

Look what I found at Flute World. I don't know how much better it would be than masking tape, but I'm going to try it!

Yamaha are normally pretty good when it comes to choice of materials. Let us know.

And let us knokw whether it is grippy because of roughness, or moisture absorbency, or just the grippiness inherent in the particular substance it is made from.

Nexcare 3M Flexible clear tape. It says on the roll, "Transpore Surgical tape." It's hypoallergenic, has a surface which is not slippery and it's clear. It sticks to a clean surface pretty well and doesn't make your flute look like a postage stamp book of some sort. You may want to try it or something like it.

You might also try Lip Plate Grips. I know that you can order them online from Carolyn Nussbaum (www.flute4u.com). I've found that they work pretty well, and they don't leave sticky stuff on the metal.

Thanks for the Carolyn N. website link. I've never been there before. I see they are the same price as Yamaha, so any suggestions on which to try first?

Ha ha ha, I used to have a problem with this, now I simply wear a sweatband on my left waist aka like those worn by the soccer referees during the soccer world cup! If any perspiration, I just quickly wipe my lips with my waist at a rest between notes and then continue playing. A bit crude, and unrefined, but never mind,I am not wearing a taxedo playing at the Met!!! My Nike waistband on by left have become a sort of trademark for me!

<Added>

Sorry its morning here, just got out of bed!!, it should be WRISTBAND, and not waist, sorry bout the spelling! LOL!

Some time ago I posted about wetting or not wetting the lip before playing and in the discussion that followed, someone (maybe it was Zevang) told us that he let the face hair under his lip grow and that helped him.
Maybe you could give it a try. It is easy to shave it off if it does not work...
