Stop right there! To get a decent recording of any instrument, you need:

• the right performance
• the right room
• the right mic, positioned correctly
• the right recorder – tape? computer?
• ... with other possible widgets such as a pre-amp, compressor, reverb unit ... etc. (NB: these often come as plug-ins to your recording software.)

An interesting exercise would be to get an experienced recording engineer to use whatever microphone you were using on the Mario clip – it'd probably end up sounding pretty good. Exercise #2 would be to spend $$$$ on a Neumann and to sound just the same.

Just guessing: you might be sitting at the computer using its on-board microphone in an acoustically "dead" room. (Could be completely wrong, of course!) Anyhow, playing while standing will sometimes give a better result. The performance sounds a bit breathless (although in some rock or jazz settings you might go for this sound deliberately, giving a sense of urgency, street cred, non-classicalness ... whatever). If you're after a clean sound, you want to avoid blowing directly into the mic.

Something is distorting: it could be that you're too close to the microphone or that the levels are wrong somewhere down the line. Then, playing in a more reverberant space (or adding "reverb" afterwards, or both) would probably be appropriate in this situation.

Here are some links to get you started:

Good luck!

if you're interested in recording through your computer, you honestly cant go wrong with the snowball from blue. approx. $100, can be bought online or in stores (found commonly at guitar center)

I used
AKG Perception 100 (C$100) and
Tapco Mix.60 Mixer 59.99
The mixer was necessary to power the Mic. and then an old laptop for recording and storage.
And then I had to buy a few connecting cables.
The software is called, Audacity. Freeware. The above piece was recorded in a dry room and I added a bit of reverb to give a stereo effect.

I also use this one...

but found it on ebay for a nice price--sold as new but blemished. It's been great, and attaches nicely to the flute (unlike the previous mic they had me use which attached under the crown-ouch, my poor flute...) Didn't want to use theirs (church's) so bought my own.

I have a similar setup, but I have mine attached at the end of my flute. That also works pretty well and I don't get nearly as much of my breathing recorded.
