I think I once saw mention here of some (preferably free) downloadable software that slows down a recording without altering pitch. Can anybody help?

Try Audacity
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

<Added>

it will speed up or slow down the tempi w/out pitch shift but if you slow down a sound file by anything more than about 23% there is an undesirable noticeable repeated stuttering quality to the tones.

Go on google and type " amazing slowdowner". I have it and it is outstanding.
However I do not remember the web site to download it.

I used Transcribe once when I was in high school (6 or 7yrs ago) and with the free trial version (then) you could speed up or slow down the speed and/or change the pitch via add'l settings. Here's their link: http://www.seventhstring.com/

If you have updated to Windows Media Player 11, it has the ability to change playback speed too.

Thanks. That's what my son finished up using.
