i have recently aquired a old selmer console clarinet, now t is a bit gross (the corks are worn quite badly apart from the mouth piece one and the pads look white with orangey/black circles on) at christmas i get some money with which i can get a like new buffet b12/yamamha student one or i can fix my selmer and get a new mouthpeice for it.so my question would be what is the best option? and if it is best to upgrade the mouthpiece on my selmer what one should i get?

I'd put some $ into the Selmer as they're very good instruments. I believe the local shop charges about $10 per tenon cork (cork on the ends). As for mouthpieces, I used to double on bass clarinet throughout concert band in high school and found that a Selmer C* mouthpiece matched with a Rovner ligature (the black leather-looking ones) and a low # (ex. #2 or 2-1/2) Vandoren reed worked perfect for me. In regards to standard Bb clarinet I found the best results to be with a Selmer C* mouthpiece, Luyben ligature (they come in neat colors!)- http://www.luybenmusic.com/ligature.htm , and a low # reed (Vandoren 2 or so). Have you tried Plasticover reeds? I like those also but the vintage ones are better lol! Good luck! Maybe I can help with fixing your clarinet as I currently have to work on one that I have here and resell it and then will be taking a break from clarinets for a while (I THINK!)!

I'm a big fan of using what you have whenever possible. Depending on what the repair tech determines needs fixing, it may be cheaper than buying a new one in the long run. Certainly worth checking into.

I have looked into the costs and i am not sure on whats better an as new buffet b12 or my selmer console (which will be in great condition after a service)

also i have looked into the luben ligure and lke the look but unfortunatley being in the uk means i am not sure if i can get one.

As for reeds i am using a 1.5 rico royal reed (i have only been playing just over a week) bcause they are what can be bought down my music shop, but i am thinking of buying a selection box from the internet but my mum wants me to try out a number 2 and decide which i need before she orders them for me.

and also does they way up the ligure is affect the way it plays (as i may have been playing with it upside down) and if so could that be why i find it hard to blow?

sorry about the questions but i am a total beginner.
