Help!

I was at an antique shop and saw the cutest, tiny little clarinet ever, and I just had to have it because it's so adorable. I don't really know what it is, though. There's a guy in my community orchestra that plays an Eb clarinet, and it's tiny like this, so I'm thinking maybe I bought an Eb, but I'm still not entirely sure. Maybe you guys can figure it out.

It's by C.G. Conn, Elkhart, Indiana. Without the mouthpiece on it (because there isn't one), it's about maybe 8 or so inches shorter than my Bb (a Vito Reso-tone 3). It just barely reaches the keypad for the G# key on my Vito. I think it might be made of wood, but I'm not sure. Sometimes they make plastic look like wood. Might be that ebonite stuff. I tried to look up the serial number, but it's not on the list. It's E49259L. Maybe you'll have better luck.

I know this thing is ancient because the keys are tarnished and just weird. The style of them just looks old. For instance, there is no circly-key-thing around the thumb hole. And the octave key starts above the thumb hole and wraps around to the front, with the key pad right above the C.G. Conn label, which is above the A and G# keys. There are only 3 trill keys on the side. On the lower joint, there are only two "left pinky-keys," and two "right pinky-keys." They resemble the keys on saxes, because they have little roller-things.

So do you know what it is? Or maybe even when it was made? Or what it's made of? Thanks!!!

- Tish

It is called an Ab sopranino clarinet. I have never seen one and don't know what it sounds like.

Haha, I've seen one. We called it the "preemie" in band. (As in, premature birth)

When I get home I'll take a few pictures and just put it on my MySpace or something. It's myspace.com/MONDOpenguin. I'll have some posted by the end of the day.

Okay, I have seven pictures on my MySpace page (the URL is in my previous post), in the photo album labeled "Identify this clarinet." Let me know if this helps!
