Is there a lot of differences between oboe and clarinet? (Except the reed)

I`m thinking of taking up oboe since I always loved the sound of it, only problem is I`m not sure it will not colide with my tenor and clarinet playing (being confused with keys and so on)

umm, yeah there is, I played Clarinet for one year before switching to Oboe and the fingerings are nothing alike. Oboe fingerings are actually very close to Flute fingerings. Also, get used to pay a whole lot of money for reeds. If you ever get into the facy hand-made ones, they can be up to $15 a piece, but store bought ones, which work fine(you just have to make sure that they look ok to play on BEFORE you buy them) tend to be about $6 a piece. Oboe is a ton of fun to play, and don`t let the expensive reeds scare ya off! But also don`t worry too much about get fingerings confused. Good luck with your Oboe playing

well, a HUGE difference is the embouchure. i play oboe, and i know that the one time i played on a clarinet before ww sectionals, and boy did that mess up my oboe playing. there`s also a difference in air velocity. in the lower register the clarinet and oboe fingerings are similar, but not much after. the reed played a major role in the whole thing too. the oboe and clarinet don`t weigh the same either and it`s different when you`re holding it b/c of width and all.

Darker? I do agree the oboe sounds beautiful, that`s why I want to play it. But it isn`t a dark instrument, not compared to the clarinet anyhow (ever listened to the clarinet concerto, thats both a bright and a dark instrument at the same time)

The fingering for the oboe is the same as the upper register of the clarinet and the saxophone. One difference is that you know the lowest C key and the Eflat/D# key above it on the sax? Well they are swapped round. The top key is the C key and the one below it is the Eflat/D# key.

The oboe has many fingerings similar to that of a flute, then again I`m not quite sure with the various registers. So far though, in my oboe playing, I haven`t found much similar to a clarinet. Unless you want to count that they can be made out of wood and plastic
