Before buying an oboe you might want to try someone else`s out, like a friend`s, school`s or a local music shop`s.

I play my school`s oboe, which is a professional wooden Yamaha. I really like it, I think the wood gives a more `full` tone, without it I would sound horrible! (I just play as a doubler, oboe is NOT my main instrument) To be honest though, I haven`t played many oboes. I do think that it would be a nice investment though to buy a wooden oboe if you are seriously interested in playing. I was never too fond of the plastic ones. Oh yah, for Carol of the Bells are you talking about the one that goes, "Hark how the bells, sweet silver bells... g*yly they ring while people sing, songs of good cheer christmas is here..."?

i own a plexi glass oboe i cant see the difference between the wooden one and the plexiglass one except the wooden one gives you a better feeling to hold but not so good to play outside if its wood because weather can give bad effects on a wooden one especialy if u play in a band that has outside concerts. I think they are both ok.
