I`ve only heard one once and thought it was kind of neat, but I`ve never played one. Has anyone? What`s it like?

Yeah I`ve played it. Very interesting instrument totally different world when playing it compared to Oboe. It really helps the oboe playing because the EH really requires Diaphram playing to make it sound pretty good. Also, EH is a solo instrument.......meaning it usually can be heard soo don`t be afraid to blow out. But I prefer oboe more but English Horn isn`t horrible unless bad horn or bocal.....

yuppers, i play english horn...i love it! i actually might like it better than oboe! it has such a sweet sound, not as harsh as oboe...and if you do play horn, you`re guaranteed a solo in any piece pretty much...if the piece has an english horn part!

Yeah it`s true but you can find EH in a real orchestra, not in a simple band, so it`s difficult that you find a place in wich playing it if you`re not a professionist. Or maybe it`s different in your countries. We don`t use EH in wind orchestras or bands.

In our bands, oboe is THE solo instrument

Well, if you want to sound like a saxophone with a bad cold covered in aluminum foil for the first few years.. go for it. Just don`t say I didn`t warn you...

The English Horn will help improve your oboe playing. I suggest trying it out, it`s not so bad unless you have a suck instrument or bocal. GO LOREE!haha

English horn is a very good instruments, and I love play with.
But it`s different about oboe and I think if you want to play very good english horn you must play only this instrument.
I think it can help for oboe but only on the airstream.

(sorry but I speak very bad english, if you don`t understand I can explain )
