I read on reviews that Lark bassoons aren't that good since they were made in China. I'm trying to negotiate one for around 200-250$. I'm not a serious bassoon player, I'm only starting out and plus I'm collecting instruments for my pieces, (music composer) and learning the basics of all instruments. I intend to be able to play it mediocre and record it for my pieces and edit them with my engineering skills so the performance sounds professional. Do you think this bassoon can provide what I need? Is the sound okay? Is the price decent for this type of brand?
I doubt it. To even start to get a characteristic bassoon sound you'll need something made by a respectable manufacturer. I'd recommend a Fox IV for what you want (others will disagree). Also you should note that getting a good sound on bassoon not only requires a decent instrument, but a good reed, and a great embrochure that can take a lot of time to develope. Also, it's not an easy instrument to just pick up and learn as it is not very similar to any other instrument. Just keep that in mind. Maybe consider finding a local player who can just play a few parts for you?
