I have only been playing the bassoon for about one year now and All region tryouts are creeping up on me. I'm currently using a Jones reed and it really isn't working. I'm not totally sure if it's the reed, but I'm having a lot of trouble with the upper register. It barley comes out and it's just a growl sound. I'm not sure what to do. By the way, my bassoon is a Fox by Renard. Please help. If there is anything you can think of that might help please tell me. Thanks.

Shave the tips? I'm not entirely sure if that's the answer, but I think it is. Also a better handmade reed would help.

I know reeds are expensive but you shouldn't be playing on the same reed every day. This makes them too soft and then you can't get out the high notes because you need some stiffness in the reed to support the high notes. Try getting another reed - or two - Jones are o.k. - and alternate playing them. When you get a little stronger embouchure you can try some of the other "store bought" reeds. There are some good makes available online.

I would highly suggest getting a higher quality hand made reed. Check out Bel Canto reeds. The people are easy to deal with and the reeds are high quality.
