Hello everyone,
I just started to learn the bassoon, and apparently, I need help;;

I attached my seat strap to the little hole at the bottom, metal joint. (Sorry, don't know the exact name for it)
However, it seems to be bothering the very bottom key to open/close, so my Bb and A sound the same -- unless i move the strap aside.
In distress, I asked my friend bassoonist in school, and she pointed out that my bassoon may be weird because the hole to attach the seat strap is located farther from my body... meaning, the little hole is on the RIGHT if you look from the playing position. (Hope I'm making sense!)
She said there is a way to possibly take off that bottom part and flip it around, but when we tried to take that part off, it was too hard...

So, my question would be the following:
Is it possible to take that part off somehow and flip it around, or is that unnecessary?
If there is a way to put on a seat strap without bothering that key, would someone please inform me?

Thank you!

Your friend is correct - the boot cap should just pull off but might need a bit of persuasion if the bassoon hasn't been serviced for some time - which most haven't especially if they belong to schools. Maybe your teacher or band director should try this then if anything slips & damage is done then it's not your responsibility

Thank you for your information!
Since my bassoon is a school one, it probably has not been taken care of for long... :/
I told my band teacher that, and he didn't even bother to attempt to fix it...
I guess I'll have to play it with constantly watching out for that seat strap. ;;

Go back to your band director and do as contra448 says: tell him you have contacted a bassoon expert online and he says the bassoon cannot be played properly with a seat strap and the boot cap in the incorrect position, and that damage is likely to occur to the keywork. Tell him another expert has confirmed this.
