Hey everybody! I'm going to start college this fall as a freshman. I'm going to be majoring in pharmacy which takes about 6 years to complete the degree. I'm taking 18 credit hours now, but I really want to do marching band too. I've balanced my schedule where I don't have any classes after 3:00. I'm finished with classes by 3 everyday. My family isn't unsupportive of my efforts, but they don't like the idea. I'm going to a college where band is quite important. At an HBCU the marching band is just as important as the football team. I'm a bit discouraged because i want my family to be okay with my wanting to be involved in music. They've been so against it I'm starting to doubt myself. How do I approach this situation? I want to do my best, but now I'm afraid!

Toni,

Congratulations on starting college. 18 units will keep you busy. It is nice that you think about your family, but you should feel comfortable making decisions for yourself and showing your family at the same time you care for them.

Bands are very important at many schools. If you want to do band then just do it. Watch your time though, if the band practices and performances interfere with your studying then drop it. Keep your primary studies in focus. Band is fun, but not if it affects your studies negatively.

If you are worried about your familys feelings, let them know you are listening to them and that you will keep your primary goal #1, and band peripherally. Do not be discouraged, as you move out into the global world and away from your structured home life you will find many people you love unhappy with some of your decisions (usually out of their selfishness). You will not be able to make everyone happy.

Don't be afraid and DO do your best.

Have fun.

Thank you for replying! I'm really going to try my best. Thats all that I know how to do. I appreciate your kind words and I do realize that this is just one of the things that my family will disagree with. I'll just have to show them that I'm really serious and I can balance myself. Thank you again.

good joboni, at least you are going to college to educate yourself! I am so excited to be able to go to college, and I am perhaps going to study botany, toxicology, bassoon, or enthomusicology.
