There is at least one scale where the trombone's tube length shortens at first as the pitch increases but suddenly the length has to be increased again to get the next highest note in the scale. This happens twice in this scale. Why is it that the partials of overtones or whatever they are work at the longer tube lengths but suddenly fail in this way as the pitch increases?
