Good job on choosing to play trombone. I have been playing for 2 years now and it is so fun. You should definatly get a book since those are much cheaper than private lesson teachers. They can also be just as good if you work hard. If you`re a beginner than try the Standard of Excellence trombone book. An intermediate? I`m using the Foundations for Superior Performance: Warm-Ups and Technique for Band book. Once again, it is great that you chose to play trombone, it is totally the best band instrument.

if u keep the slide all the way in on first, your pitch will more than likely be flawed, so dont move it out alot but wiggle it around a bit to get it perfect

Guys don`t use positions! they`re out of tune when you play higher (example if you play a D above the staff in fourth position it is way out of tune and so are e`s in "2nd position"

this is to Nao. yes you`ll have to just keep practicing but maybe if you try playing a chromatic scale that might help getting above F. i`ll give you the chromatic scale. if you can play the low F. start in 6th position and come up to 1st. then go to 7th and come to 1st. then you`ll be at F. go out to 5th position and that`s F# and try to gradually go up till you get to 1st and if you get there you`ll hit the high Bb. hope this helps. in case you want to know the rest of the scale is 4 to 1, 3 to 1 and back down but that gets really high so don`t worry right now. hope this helps you some. good luck. stacey

Listen up all you newbies on trombone! You have picked a good instrument to learn.Memorize your positions first(this helps alot)! start out on slow whole notes at slow tempos. Gradually take it up steps.Every position is different. The number one reason is because you use your slide to match the note with your patner. Use your ears the whole time you play.Look ahead and keep trying.I know what I`m talking about i`ve played trombone for 4 and a half year in Upson Lee Middle school and Upson Lee High School.

My advice would be buy one of those "Standard of Excellence" books. Hey, as cheesy as those things are, they work. Plus they have all the slide positions and most of the scales in the back of the book. And they come in three nifty-spifty colors! Red is beginner, blue is intermediate, and green is the book where it actually gets kind of hard. I hope I helped you some!
