Hi all. I play a couple instruments and am hoping to pick up violin as well. I was looking at one on craigslist, clearly sold by someone who doesn't know a lot about violins. I emailed to set up a a time to check it out, but I don't know what I'm looking for when making my decision.
I am aware that the sound is key to making the decision, but this violin doesn't seem to have strings, all of its pegs or a bow, so that's out of the picture. Anyway, I wouldn't know what I'd be listening for.
So, aside from cracks, chips and warping, is there anything else I should look for to determine the quality and condition of this instrument?
If there are any crack or warping...you shouldn't even THINK of buying it. Bow is very important to the sound and I think that the idea of the old violin should not be of interest. If anything, it should be used as firewood, cuz to have the instrument refurbished, tooooo much money.
Re the picture, it's set to private view so I can't see it. I have to say that I agree entirely that it's probably a bad idea to buy it anyway. Cracks can be tricky to spot and so can warping. Save your money for one you can at least examine carefully. The only time it's even half safe buying a violin without playing is if you buy it from a good luthier with a reputation to maintain. I recently bought a viola from Ma Zhibin in China and it was an outstanding purchase. I am delighted with it.
