I own a 16 inch viola, sounds great. But I heard the higher it goes, the better itsounds. But of course the player has to be comfortable enough to use his/her skills well. I`m 5`11" and was just wondering if 16 inch is right for me. My teacher picked me the 16 inch, to give a little leeway. He says I`m fine with it. I`m just curious myself. =/

Hey there, Mike. Ok...about your viola size! Well, I`m 5`11", as well. I`ve always had long arms and long fingers. My viola teacher used to joke around with me by saying, "Are you sure you shouldn`t be playing piano?" Anywho, it`s best to just be comfortable with your viola. I play a 16 1/2" viola. People make fun of me because it does look kind of big on me but I`m really comfortable with it. So really, don`t let your teacher dictate what size you use. It`s always good to take your teacher`s advice to heart...but it`s all about what you`re COMFORTABLE with. If, for whatever reason, you don`t like the 16", just try something else. It doesn`t hurt to explore your options. Good luck, and I hope you find "the" viola for you.
