Thinking of taking up the viola

I have been away from music for about three years, before college I played the trumpet and baritone for about six years, but now I would like to try out a string instrument. I like the viola for its deeper, warmer tone. Anyway, I have been poking around on the net and I saw this offer on amazon.com, is this any good?

It`s a Doreli Model 89 Viola, while I did play the viola for a year when I was very yong, I have no idea what to look for when selecting one. I am basically looking for a decent beginner model, but I really cannot spend more than $250. Also, regarding the size of the viola, I am about 5`6" and my hands are not that large, how do I know what size viola to get? Thanks for your help.

Yeah!! Viola Rules!! Is there any string instrument better?? OF COURSE NOT . Try checking out http://www.violinslover.com. They have great violas for great prices. I`m not an expert, but on the note of sizes, you may want to go to your local music store and test the violas from 15" up. Just remember that you want the viola to be comfortable when played, not a strain. Good Luck!

If you`re serious, get to a dealer near you and try out instruments. Don`t try any bigger than 16" and you may be more comfortable on a 15.5". Most viola players wish they had a smaller instrument than they do. If you want more explanations on the sizing and the reason for it, email me.

I checked out http://www.violinslover.com and I must say that I am impressed with the prices and selcetion. I think I will find a local dealer and see what size is for me, but I will probably make my selection from violinslover.com.

yeah, violinslover.com is a great company, not a bad choice for beginner instruments, not bad at all. Keep looking around online, though. violinslover.com is just one of the many viol shops online. I also recommend stringworks.com - higher prices, but really good violas.
