I was on violinslover.com shopping for a stundent viola and there are two different kinds of "Genial-1" violas: a one-piece back and another that has a seam down the middle. What is the advantage/disadvantage of one over the other?

The price?? They weren`t selling Genial - 1`s with one - piece backs when I got them ... I guess one advantage is that there won`t be any seam damages to the actual back itself ...

The one-piece back genial-1`s are listed as a special, so they were probably added recently.
