I probably should add that i`ve found cool solo cello parts on songs by nirvana, powderfinger, ben folds, gomez, PJ harvey, smashing pumpkins, damien rice etc. I love the emotional but non-sappy depth it adds to the sound of a song!
Anyway hope u guys can think of more..

Don`t know if this is what you`re looking for(maybe too "sappy"), but some of the older rock songs have some cello. Beatles used some (also string quartet. Try "Eleanor Rigby" and "Michelle," also listen for it in other Beatles. Also try the Moody Blues. They used a lot of orchestration. They had a really neat piece called "Forever Autumn" that I think used some cello. But check out some of their other material as well.

Try Rasputina.
It`s a cello rock band, and they have a pretty good sized following. The music is very baroque-esque, consists of two celloists and a drummer (well the line up now anyway, it used to be a three-cello ensemble) and the leader of the band, Melora, she`s the singer. Two of my fav albums by them are "Thanks for the Ether" and "Cabin Fever." If you`re downloading, try "stumpside," "crosswalk," or "any old actress"....you can go to amazon.com and listen to some clips from their albums I think.

Paul Weller has used the cello. One song that comes to mind is A Year Late.

Rasputina as was already mentioned...I only bring them up because they are amazing. If you are looking for that darker, goth-ish feel, try Murder by Death. Great stuff, piano with cello.
Hope this helps, although, MBD isn`t that `popular`. But hey, you`ll sure be cool.

apocalyptica - finnish band, classically trained cellists who play metal, most famous for their 4-cello-version of "nothing else matters"
jorane - french-canadian singer and cellist, beautiful folksy pop music
zoe keating - also canadian
there`s loads more but you will probably not know them. there are many cellists who play on recordings of famous pop/rock artists or do film scores but since the cello hasn`t traditionally been a solo instrument in pop music there are few cello soloists. above mentioned are the only ones i can think of (along with rasputina but i dont like them ;-)) who use the cello as the central instrument in their music.
and i second the suggestions to listen to damien rice`s music and the beatles "eleanor rigby"...my, such beautiful music!

Definitely some Damien Rice. The cellist that plays with him, Vyvienne Long, she`s wonderful. She plays some amazing short solo songs, like "Come Together", "7 nation army" and "Purple Haze"! She can really jam. Her voice isn`t the greatest, but she usually doesn`t sing. Most of the time her cello is her voice and she accompanies Damien Rice and Lisa Hanigan beautifully
Some of Heather Nova`s early work included a cellist by the name of Nadia Landman? I believe. She doesn`t play anymore because she hurt her arm, but her cello playing was beyond gorgeous. Heather Nova really lost something when Nadia couldn`t play anymore- her work just doesn`t have the same depth as it once did.
Nick Drake has a nice little song with lots of cello- it`s called "The Cello Song"!
If I can get something uploaded on yousendit, I`ll post it here, but I haven`t had much luck with uploading lately
