It`s the smallest interval distance in the 12 tone equal tempered scale. For example, the distance from A to A# is a half step, same with B to C, D to Db, and so on.
A whole step is twice the distance of a half step. The pattern of whole and half steps in a major scale is whole, whole, half, whole, whole, whole, half.
