Hi, Which type of mouthpiece would anybody recommend for playing classical music on the Alto sax? Can you play Classical on a metal mpc or would it be too rich? I have never tried a metal so I was just wondering, I use a Selmer C** and want to change, I prefer playing Classical although I do play Jazz on occassions too.

Try a Caravan, Selmer (s80 or s90 C*, C**, D, Larry Teal or Soloist), Rousseau and Rousseau New Classic (4, 5), Vandoren, Caravan, Morgan, and Bilger for a more Classical sound. I`ve heard some excellent sounds/skills come out of these mouthpieces. It really depends on your tone concept, your other equipment, and how you are put together physically.

well a relli good classical mouthpiece is the rasher*spelling i know* the only down side with that mouthpiece is u hafta have a certain embouchure for it to sound right. that mouth piece wants u to have 1 distinct classical sound. it will not let u alter that sound. if u try u will sound like crap. i know my friend has yet to find the rasher embouchure.

Right now I use a Yamaha 4c (it sux), but I would REALLY recommend investing in a Eugene Rousseau 4R. They sound very nice.

Hi! Ive been playing sax for almost 7 years. I had this problem before. You have to have a crisp sounding mouthpiece for classical, and a rich and full bodied sound for Jazz. I would recomend a poly crystal mouthpiece for classical and a metal for Jazz. Poly Crystal gives you a clear crisp sound and is great for classical. Its a really good investment, and will improve your sound TONS!

Definately you want to go to the rosseau 4R or 5R, it produces incredible tone on my sax.

Many clarinet players use crystal mouthpieces.
They are also available for saxophones.
I tried a Pomarico crystal, and liked it, but I could not find one that had an open enough face for my likes. Maybe a harder reed would have helped. They chip or break if dropped or dinged.

I stongly suggest that you purchase the new Selmer Paris Soloist mouthpiece for the alto. Forget buying all of those other mouthpieces. Selmer makes the best, and they always will. This mouthpiece will give you a warmer sound, sweeter tone, and a very, very, very, good responce from your reed. This mouthpiece is definatly not for beginners, as it requires that you have a developed embrocher to get the most out of it. It is very capable of playing jazz with a size 3 Java.
