Hi, I recently purchased a soprano saxophone. In playing it, I have noticed that it will not play anything below a low F#. Can anyone please help me to figure out what could be happening? I think it might have something to do with they way I am holding it with my mouth. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks ahead of time!
KC

Hi KC,

I`m playing the soprano sax for over ten years now and I had the same problem in the beginning, so I presume you don`t play it a long time.
There are several options why the saxophone don`t give any sound beneath the F#.
1 The saxophone must be repaird. {this is the less likely option}
2 the most likely option is that you have not found the proper balance between tension and relaxation within your mouth. {please forgive me my bad English} You probably give it to much tension.
Don`t forget to pay attention to breath support, {Don`t know the English term for it}

Hey, thanks to you both for posting. In answer, no I don`t use circular breathing, I don`t know how...I got the horn to work, I was afraid I was holding it to tight, I play alto and tenor right now mostly, I have been playing for like...4 or 5 years and I remembered that that was often a problem. I tuned the horn the other day and it was REALLY flat, when I finally got it in tune, it worked. I guess maybe it was just too far out of tune to play the notes. Thank you for helping! Now if I could just get my soprano to sound as good as my alto and tenor do! hehe...
Thanks bunchez
