I would like to buy and alto recorder in similar pricing to the Yamaha series, which I'm told are good to start on. Does any other manufacturer make models as good for similar pricing and if so, what models?

I've heard good things about Angel and Aulos recorders from some friends, but I haven't played recorders by either personally. I can ask more about them, though.
My alto is made by Gill. I don't think it's as high quality as Yamaha recorders are, and I think that I like Yamaha altos better though I feel guilty for saying it, but mine was less expensive. It's not like it's horrible to play, but it feels and sounds rather reedy/shallow to me, though that might have more to do with my playing than the quality of the instrument. Hurray for budget model musical instruments. =)
I wish I knew something useful to tell you. I'll ask more about the Angel recorders. I think which recorder to buy depends a lot on what you want to play and with whom you want to play it. Good luck!
