Although I'm looking at used, too, what are some good brands that a highschool student can afford? And if you know any tips for finding good quality, cheap horns, please share the knowledge!

Thanks

Tough question - different prices are considered "affordable" by different people. And what level is the high school player? My recommendation would be different for a beginner than for some one who has played for a couple of years. My recommendation would be different based on what they have tried and liked, and tried and didn't like. My recommendation would be different on whether they wanted it just for the high school years, for the high school years and community band groups, or college just to play in the band, or college and wanting to go further in music. East coast or West coast - USA or UK?

Budget? $1K, $2K, $3k, ?

A real popular less expensive one right now is Jupiter horns.

When I was in high school I couldn't afford any Horn.I got a very small allowance and was rquired to do my homework and music, so I couldn't have a job while in high school.
French horns are made of metal and can last a long long time. They are an investment. If you only what to play through high school borrow one or rent one.

I'd say you can't go wrong with a used Holton, used Conn or a used Yamaha. ($1000 to $2000) Even if you have to get some work done on them, they are usually a good deal. I'll never, ever waste my money on a new horn again, when I can get something just as good for a fraction of the cost. I've never met a Holton that I didn't like. I've met a few Conns that I didnt like. (I particularly like the Conn 6D.) And lots of people like the Yamahas (I like the 668). But old double Kings and Reynolds are also very good.

Hi Valerie
I am also a recent return player after MANY years of raising kids etc. Purchased a vintage conn 6D. Didn't take long to make major improvements considering have not played for 30+ years. Love my horn. Also play tenor sax with local community college. At this point no pressure, all fun. Also play flute and just took up baritone. That is the easiest so far.
