I'm a flute player but a jazz lover! I had no desire to persue anything or jazz until my grandfather (just as jazz obsessed as me) gave me flute CD's. Now, I know flute isn't that much of a "high school jazz" instrument but I'm going to try anyways!
I'm going to go in prepared with scales and songs and rip through them. I'm not techanically "allowed" oto try out but I just want to prove to them that there is such a thing as jazz flute.

I was sondering if anyone knew any really good websites that explains in full depth like jazz scales and how to switch keys really easy (like from trumpet to flute: it's so hard to find any decent flute jazz pieces) and stuff like that? I would love all the help I can get. Thanks!

There's a longer comment on its way; in the meantime: Count Basie, Zurich, 1959. On flute: Frank Wess! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-E2_RDIdOfg (The flute solo is at 2:50.)

... a few random thoughts ...

Try some Google searches –

Here's one site that comes up – http://www.petethomas.co.uk/jazz-theory.html – check out the column of topics on the left.

Here's the Sax on the Web "Jazz and Improvisation" thread ... some good ideas for flautists too! – http://forum.saxontheweb.net/forumdisplay.php?f=39

You mentioned your grandfather's CDs. Listening is HUGELY important. ("Homework" might be sitting around listening to music! Does it get any better than this?!)

A really good thing to do is to transcribe the solos of great players. You might find that writing the solo out works best (for you individually); by ear might work better. Either way, working it out yourself is a MUCH better technique than just buying a book of solos. Look for solos (or even just licks) from players of other instruments too.

Sounds like you're thinking of auditioning for a spot in a ... big band? ... combo? ... impro class? If so, how soon? Let's know some more.
