My youth orchestra starts next week. Last year we played Danse Bacchanale, and the 1st oboist was playing e.h. so I got the cadenza at the beginning. We also played the last movement of New world symphony, and that was really fun too.

Thanks! I have been practicing the music and I really like everything we are playing. My favorite is Capriccio Espagnol. I really like the english horn part in the 2nd movement. Are you playing anything fun in youth symphony?

Cool! The english horn is such a fun instrument to play! I actually think fox instruments are pretty nice. Some people say they aren't great, but I think the one I have is pretty good at least. Yesterday I found out I made 1st chair oboe for youth symphony, and I also made for english horn! I really am looking forward to playing e.h. because I really never have had that much of an opportunity to play it anywhere!

That's one of the reasons I switched to Oboe. I have had more of a chance to be noticed. I'd pretty much have to be stupendous on the flute in order to really stick out from my peer flautists.

I have yet to perform in a Chamber ensemble but I would really love to.
And I've tried to get people so we could make a woodwind quintet but it's tuff getting the bassoonist in my year to play xD.

How long have you been playing flute? On which instrument would you consider yourself to be a stronger player?

O how nice. Concert Band is a lot of fun but there's nothing like playing in an orchestra. The music is simply sublime xD.

lol I should try that. Too bad I only have one saxophone neck strap. Maybe I can find another one somewhere..

lol I can't wait to start making reeds!

I might start playing the Marcello for a competition (if I remember to mention it to my teacher >.>. The pieces I'm working on atm r the Mozart Oboe Quartet (hopefully for my school's December concert) and the Charles Colin 3rd Solo de Concert (College Recital I might be playing in).
I'm also going to work on the Saint Saens Sonata later in the year for my All-State Audition again (I hope I can get another 100 >.< and my teacher told me we would work on the Haydn Concerto though I think that's just for fun xD.

Crap.............I better start practicing again. I took a day off yesterday but now I don't think I can afford it lol.

That's a good idea! I probably have to find a new neckstrap soon because the one I am using is breaking so I have to tape it together in order to use it lol.

No I haven't but I can imagine how much work it must take to make Oboe reeds lol. Right now I'm still refining my playing, though I'll probably start making them later in the school year with my teacher.

Btw are there any pieces you working on? What are your plans for the future?

And did I mention it was very nice to meet you?

O np. I've been playing Oboe for what will be two years by late October. If you wanna hear what I sound like you can listen to my School recital. I performed the Concertino in C by C.M. Von Weber on May 1st (exactly one week from my b-day ^-^).

Umm.....I tried English Horn while I was in All-City but the odds were against. They had two horns, 2 bocals and 1 reed. All crap lol. I liked it but I wanna try it again with a good horn, bocal and reed the next time around.

No I do not play on a Loree. I play on a Fox Renard Model, plastic resin. It's a good horn and I've been using it since I started xD.
It's actually the school's though so for a while now my Teacher has been looking for an Oboe of my own. I love the Oboe so much I want it to be my main instrument when I major in music for College :D.

Hmm, that might be too short, but I don't know. My neck strap is about 24 inches. Do you have the e.h. that you can try it on yet?

oboegirl
Hi,
Actually, I don't know what brand of neck strap I use. I found it in our school's bassoon case, but it doesn't have any markings or anything. I have seen neck straps that you can buy that are specifically for english horn, but you should try the one you have before you buy one. The english horn isn't too hard to play, but the half-hole is kind of weird and takes getting used to! It also takes more air to play.

Not yet, but I will play it in a youth orchestra next year. I am really looking forward to it.

It would be nice if my school had an english horn! I think my Fox e.h. is ok, but I would really like to play on a Loree english horn one day. I bet marigaux english horns are really good too.

That's good! I am currently using my old 441 to play in a pit orchestra because I'm still in the process of breaking in my new instrument. It sounds ok, but isn't as good as the loree!

oboegirl
No I didn't get a chance to, but I wish I did! I've heard that they make great instruments!

Thanks! It is by Telemann and I got it from the book "Solos for the English horn player." So it wasn't originally written for English horn, but I still think it sounds cool.

It's been snowy here for awhile. Lucky you in the heat."

Wouldn't mind some snow! It's OK at present, but a couple of days ago I copped a real blast of sun ... and I was wearing hat, sunnies, shirt; I wasn't out for long, etc.

Friends of mine are visiting Vancouver right now – I'm getting their pics and descriptions of cars being snowed in, side-streets remaining uncleared, driving fun-and-games on black ice, etc. Sounds pretty dire! Must be hell for woodwind instruments.

Hi! Just wondered whether you'd suddenly gone "dirty" and "little" ... but, presumably, remained Canadian. (It's your oboe piccy!)

Anyhow, have a great New Year!

cheers – zoom

Yes, and that's because the oboe is in the same key and plays the same notes as the flute.

I did a duet in competition with my friend who plays the flute. It went pretty well, except that she plays very softly, and it was hard to match her level without dropping my pitch, so I overpowered her slightly.
