I had the same problem. I started playing the flute in the middle of my 8th grade year. Was fun when i broke my 1st flute. Cheap thing didn`t even cost $150! It was a dark material which i don`t know what they call it. But now i got a Jupiter 7000S thats is sterling silver, and silver plated foot and body, with a gold mouthpiece. I really love this flute. You should get a open-hole flute with a b-foot if you can. It cost more than a C-foot, but if you can get one. Brands to get are: Jupiter. Geemeinhardt, Yamaha, Armstrong, Emerson, and there are lots more but i can`t think of any at the moment.

Also, if you are looking to spent a bit more you could get a Miyazawa or Muramatsu. Both of these are professional flute brands and will definalely last. I have a Miyazawa flute and have had it since I was 7(i`m now 15)and the flute is still fine.

I`m not sure if you`re still looking, but I have some advice. If you are 12, you do not need a b foot flute, unless you are serious on continuing. B foot flutes are professional flutes, and they do sound better, but they are very fragile (easily dinged). I had an Armstong beginner flute, and an Armstrong professional flute, and I loved them both. I`m not sure if they make them anymore. Do not forget that professional flutes are open-holed, although they come with plugs. I was playing for almost 20 years, I have not encountered a low B in flute music yet, though they may be out there. If you or anyone you know needs private lessons, I`m also starting to teach beginners and intermediates. Good luck with your flute-searching!

Yamaha Aalegro Pro is like one of the highest qualities of student flutes. It`s very sturdy and has a firm sound on the high notes. Gaminhearts(sp) are also very good flutes to use, but the dent bad if you drop them too much. If I were you I`d go to the music shop and just ask to sample a few of the flues they have. Choose the best for your style.

At your stage of playing I would reccomend something of the standard of a Yamaha 211s. I had one of those until my 2nd year at university when I bought a Miyazawa which I still have today - 12 years of teaching semi-pro playing. You could go for something with a silver head joint if you are desperate to part with the cash!

Oops, that should say teaching AND semi-pro playing. Obviously no typing skills involved!

I agree. At your age you don`t need a miyazawa or muramatsu. Those are high dollar instruments and are intended only for serious students and professionals. I am a college student and play on a Gemeinhardt KGM Limited. I played on a Gemeinhardt 2SP for 7 yrs before getting a new instrument. You should get a flute that is silver plated because the finish will last longer. Nickel is shiny but easily wears due to sweat. Go for a student flute that is closed hole and I do not think you need a b foot at your age. You will not encounter it until later in college if you continue with flute. I would recommend a Gemeinhardt, Emerson, or Armstrong for a less costly beginner flute.
