Hmm...
The first year I went to a music camp was the most interesting week of my life. I was the second to last flute in the lowest band and completely was bad. The music was so hard (I just looked up the hardest piece we played, and it was a Grade 1...that was how bad I was). Actually, all of them were grade 1`s. Oh gosh...
Some things happened that I choose to forget. After camp, I went to a music store, bought a book, and got better. I had only been playing since fifth grade (this was the summer before seventh).
The summer before eighth grade (my second year at camp) I went up a band and got even better. My favorite memories are there was a dance and my friends and I just played cards
all during the dance in a parking space and put money in the meters. I made someone that came down with my school leave our parking space by telling him he received his pre-algebra homework over the summer
My second memory is having my friend and I switch instruments (she plays clarinet and I play flute) and the results. She had played a flute before and she was just fine. My sound on the clarinet was interesting.
Summer music camps are very helpful, in my opinion, if you take them seriously you will improve. I knew someone, though, who moved up one chair in band or didn`t improve at all between the two years.
