Hi, I am in the second year of my cello. I am having a real problem. I know this sounds stupid but, we just started leaning second postion and I dont get it at all the notes dont make sense to me. How do you tell where to put your hands? How can you tell the differnce betwwen first and second postion on a piece of music? Also, does anyone know about enharmonics. I am reaaly embarrsed to ask my teacher because we should aready know. But, I have trouble remembering. If you can help me please e-mail me at Hufflepuff_seeker@hotmail.com

I don`t play the cello, but I do play the violin. Second position is when your first finger is placed where your second finger goes in first position. You just have to judge when to use it- usually when the notes get too high for first position, or if you would have to do awkward bowings and fingerings in 1st position.
Enharmonics are notes with different names that have the same pitch (well, on the piano, anyway) for example C# and Db.

Thanks a lot Rachel! Thats explains a lot! I only have one more question: What about notes that are half way down the cello`s neck?

I`m not entirely sure of that, because the spacing between notes on a cello is different from on a violin. Halfway down the neck could be 3rd, 4th, 5th position- I don`t really know.
