Hi, I`m a high school sophmore and i just recently made a jazz quartet through my school on 2nd alto, and I have been told my tone is too dark. My band director says that I have a perfect dark sound and great tone for concert, but I really love the jazz group I`m in. Listening to my lead parts, a clear but dark sound comes out instead of a bright, brilliant, and edgy tone that should lead.I also play at my church and i have developed a great vibrato, tone, and even a growl for some songs. I personally have bought myself a sax when I first started in 6th grade (YAS-23 I know its crappy), and a new sax is out of the question for my price range.I also use a selmer S-80 C* mouthpiece and a rovner dark ligature and vandoren #3. My parents refuse to help me with anything financially, and I was wondering if there are any low cost quality mouthpiece/ligature/reed combonation. I am more than willing to spend about $150 total and am skeptical about spending any more than that. If anyone can help, you will be greatly appreciated by me and anyone else in my situation. Thank you, and God bless.
