Vibrato is to be done in units of four. IE: 4/8/16 per set. Curve yr fingers and work from the `real` note and tilt yr finger back(first) and forth slightly. Do this in a relax and natural manner. Tilt the finger back as in one semitone lower, and forth as in back to yr actual note. You should learn to initiate the vibrato from the finger and hand at first...not the wrist. This will develop into a good hand/arm vibrato in time to come. Do this ex. as often as u can. It`s a time consuming process that ain`t gonna be any easier. Make sure yr viola is tucked tightly under yr chin as u tilt yr hand and finger...A shaking instrument isn`t gonna come in handy. So, for a start, I suggest that u pin yr viola against the wall with yr scroll, and do infront of the mirror. U can try holding it slightly around yr chest like a guitar(still horizontally) and work yr fingers from there. This position is easier as yr hand is more relaxed this way. Tuck the viola under yr chin as soon as u feel comfortable in doing so. But most imp, pls ask yr teacher to check yr vibrato. Caz if yr doing the wrong way...then yr gonna have a hell of a time trying to change the bad impulse driven habbit.
