What do you think are the most challenging single works for clarinet?

I would say it`d be either Debussy Premiere Rhapsody or the Martinu Sonatine. Both demand a lot from the performer and for different reasons

The Martinu Sonatine isn`t THAT difficult. I can`t comment on the Debussy, I don`t like it and have never played it. I`d put the Corigliano Concerto as about the hardest.

Just a question, Rachel? I don`t really know the Corigliano concerto and have never heard a recording or seen sheet music or anything. What`s it like? (Style-wise, I mean). I`m not from the US - is the composer American? Maybe that`s why I don`t know it.
I would say that the most challenging piece of music I know of is Debussy Premiere Rhapsodie. It has considerable technical difficulty and also performance wise, is extremely complicated. That`s typical of Impressionist composers, I think. Why don`t you like it? I absolutely love those enigmatic chords and that floating melodic line. Its gorgeous!!

I can`t really explain the Corigliano. It is a good piece, but VERY difficult. It is a 20th century piece. The first movement is 2 fast cadenzas separated by an interlude, the second movement (elegy) is an adagio, and a duet with the 1st violin, and the 3rd movement is titled "antiphonal toccata". I just started work on it today.
Debussy... I don`t really like French composers, their music has always seemed rather weak to me.
