I haven`t done the violin thing since about the fourth grade, and I just bought a cheap starter violin for kicks. But when I drag the bow across the strings, no noise results. Why wont my violin make any noise?

Hey Mell, I am only a new violin player myself, but what comes to mind is did you rosin the bow up really good? If the hair on the bow hasn`t been well rosined the horse hair will just slide silently over the strings. Bows don`t often come with rosin on the hare.
