Kara,
Do you have to get a black lacquered alto? Because I know of some decent saxophones for under $1000.
http://www.saxophones.co.uk/index2.html
Since the site is run by a British-based company, the prices are in pounds, but if you convert them to U.S. dollars, they should fit your budget just fine.
Just a bit of additional advice:
Apart from the obvious differences in appearances, there is hardly anything different from regular lacquer, matte, silver, and black lacquer (the most common ones I`ve seen) apart from subtle nuances in the tone quality that differs for each type of lacquer. But since you`re a student, I would just recommend that you buy one of the regular-lacquered Keilwerth`s in the link I have provided you. They play decently, and they will suit you just fine.
Take care.

If you look on the sidebar when you reach that page, there is a list of the different brands of saxes that they sell (Selmer, Yamaha, Yanisigawa, etc.). You can look at the prices of all of those, but I would personally recommend a Yamaha or a Keilwerth for your budget range. Having played a Yamaha for 5 years and just recently switching to a Selmer, I know that they are good quality saxes for their price.
Once you start playing in different styles of music, certain brands of saxophone become more specialized to each one. For instance, a Selmer sax is best suited to classical, and a Keilwerth is best suited to jazz. However, they are not limited to those styles. I use my Selmer for both concert band and for jazz band, and it suits me just fine.
Yamaha saxes are more versatile, however. They can be used for more than one style of music with great flexibility. Jazz altoist P.J. Perry (who has played with my school) happens to play on a Yamaha Z.
You may want to experiment a little bit. Try more than one sax to see which one best fits you.
Happy playing!

What kind of sax do you currently play on?
~the best you can probably get for $2000 is intermediate, it would be better to save up and get a pro one.
