im thinking of just learning the notes myself then buy a book n work through it

Second hand if you are on a budget...with no budget, get a new one. I have gotten almost all my flutes second hand and they have all served me well.
Get a teacher to help you through the notes and stuff and then do the rest on your own...If you mess up in the beginning, you could get the wrong ideas and fall into bad habits or ruts...

Hi I play Trumpet and have been for four years but I saw my brothers Flute and I picked it up and I loved it, I could play anything on from Hot Cross Buns to Mozart (not kidding) I was bying sheet music and everything then one day my mum said "dont play Flute anymore it will ruin your Embrochure" and I was so angry cause I like Flute heaps better than Trumpets. I didn`t get to choose my Instrument my mum said that we have a Trumpet lying around so I may as well learn that. And I hate JAZZ!! Seriously why bother playing a Trumpet if you Hate Jazz. I know 2 scales on TRumpet after 4 yrs and now I know 9 scales on Flute after 2 days I mean cant you see that I am better at Flute than Trumpet. PLeeeeeze give me all your opinions.

My Music Teacher lets kids take up Trumpets after other Instruments but he wont let kids that already play Trumpets learn other instruments because he doesn`t like the instrument

Ask your brother to play trumpet so you can have his flute. Lol!

My director also has a problem with people playing two instruments...he says a lot of stuff about mouth muscles...I play trombone and am learing the trumpet (slowly) from a friend and I have to do it in secret because my director would be upset because he wants me only on flute....Go with playing the flute!!!

i think i`ll do only a couple of lessons..
i like the trumpet.. my musical interest is pretty wide. My mother alsways said that you should have a "hobby"..u no that kinda thing when they say u can always turn to it no matter what and release your feelings.-she paints....she wanted me to learn an instrument..obviously pianos the first thing people do..gave up. 10 years later i picked up a trumpet at a try out and made a note(a decent one too! lol) so i started trumpet. It`s not very..ahem.."relaxing.." or emotional..but it`s great in bands and has bounce to it. i guess that`s why i like it..
But i also like the flute..it suits different types of music and i guess thats another reason why i want to learn it. I`ts wonderful to be able to "express" yourself through music in different ways

so ANYWAY lol...before i go out and blow all my part time job income on buying one..anything anybody would like to say? Any bad habits u guys have..(which ofcourse you don`t want me to develop..) speak!!! lol

I think you should want to make our mum proud ,but if you don`t want to play the flute sit your mum down and tell her that the flute doesn`t make you happy and that the trumpet does. Ibet she will see how you feel and will be proud and happy of you no matter what.
