As long as your upper teeth are nestled against your upper lip, and do not project down BELOW your lip, the upper lip is fine.
To test whether you have a problem with interference from the teeth:
While playing a long note, gradually close your lower jaw, so that your teeth get closer to each other. At some point, turbulence of the airstream will SUDDENLY start, and seriously mess up your tone.If you do this exercise without the flute, you will suddenly HEAR the airstream get a lot more noisy when turbulence is introduced.
YOu can also try the effects of introducing turbulence by either raising the front or back of your tongue until that turbulence suddenly starts, i.e. when the tongue almost reaches the roof of the mouth.
I once came across a self-taught flute player who did not use her upper lip at all for her embouchure. The embouchure was between her lower lip and her upper teeth. If you looked at her you could SEE her upper teeth while she was playing! Needless to say, her tone was appalling, and she had no control over pitch. I doubt she could even play in the third octave.
