I just bought a piccolo (I have played flute for 11 years so I decided to try piccolo) Although i`m having trouble getting a sound out out of it. If you have some advice let me know.

I don`t know why that article says to puff cheeks slightly. That is quite unnecessary IMO.

Play piccolo like flute, but...

Even faster air (I`ve heard 60 mph for high notes), needing higher air pressure (i.e. blowing harder. AND, lips pressed more together to make a smaller embouchure hole.

Don`t smile more, and definitely do not pull lips tight around teeth.

Piccolo needs a faster, thinner airstream, aimed VERY accurately. If your accuracy is poor (resulting in `fuzzy` tone on flute), then you don`t have much hope of success on piccolo.

Good luck and good management!

Arak, have you seen people puff their cheeks out when playing the flute also? Mrs. Galway plays like that. I was tought how to do it, but I never mastered the technique. I just didn`t like it.

When I play, my embousure is slighty different from playing my flute. My piccolo is a Yamaha YPC 32. The way I put my lips is that i tighten the ends of my lips more and make my mouth a little wider. I don`t know if that makes sense to you or if it helps you any. Another thing I have just figured out today. I was playing my piccolo infront of the mirror (I think it`s cool when I play one of sousas piccolo solos infront of the mirror lol) and i hav noticed that I held the piccolo slighty down, instead of straight. This problem caused my to not to be able to get the G natural and G flat out very good. So I tried to make it more, level and line it up with my mouth, and the next thing you know, I`m playing the G`s like NOThing...Hmm, hope that helps?

Good luck, I really do hope you get the hang of it soon. I think this country could use some more musicians. Lol
