It’s Julliard.

Julliard is one of the most competitive performing arts schools in the US. Everything there comes down to competition. Ultimately your classmates are also you main competitors.

Some find that very stressful and others find it invigoration. It all depends on your personality.

Of my two main music teachers one attended Julliard and the other was a graduate of the Berklee College of Music in Boston. Two very different institutions, yet they both feel they received the best music education they could have.

Check out each school you are interested in personally and get a feel for how the classes are and what the expectations are. Base your choice as much on what approach you think will work best with your personality and style of learning as anything else.

Don`t let a prestigious name be the deciding factor. There are lots of great music schools, and depending on what you specifically want to study and achieve there may be some that are more specialized in what you want to learn.

if you really wanted to go to julliard you would know the freaking name of the school! and julliard is not the only musical school you should consider looking at others.

Hey, leave the kid alone! If he/she doesn`t know everything, it`s not his/her problem. If you want to make a valid argument, at least try and use good punctuation.

I think anyone who wants to go to music college needs to accept that it`s bl*ody hard. The best thing I can advise is to study a little longer- I don`t know what 8th grade means, what age are you?- and then find a good, honest teacher who will tell you honestly if you have what it takes or not.

And as a slight aside- it`s no shame if you don`t have what it takes: very few of us do. I didn`t, but I`m happy with my jet set lifestyle

Mrs. Carbo-
Kids in 8th grade (US) are generally 13-14 years old.

Ah OK. In that case, don`t even think about music college for at least another three years

yeah they have a pre-college at julliard. I myself wouldn`t want to go, even though i would like to go to a prestigious music school for college. I think if you went to a high school for music you wouldn`t have a normal school life and you wouldn`t have all the experiences that you would get in a public high school which are important in life.

Practical facts, some good programs, and are you ready for 8 hours + with your instrument per day?    05:39 on Tuesday, July 19, 2005

Other excellent programs to look into are:
Eastman School of Music
Northwestern in Illinois
Ithaca College(smaller, still great)
University of Colorado at Boulder

Several conservatories where you don`t call them, THEY call you...one in Pennsylvania, and the name escapes me.

And there are MORE! Julliard is not the be all and end all...it is however a PRESSURE COOKER.

If you are truly serious, HOW much are you practicing NOW? Because if Julliard or comparable schools are what you want, prepare to spend your LIFE practicing. My friend who JUST missed the cut for Kujala`s studio at Northwestern and ended up on scholarship at Indiana had already won a concerto competition at your age against seniors...and was practicing 3-4 hours on school days and MORE, MUCH more on weekends/holidays/summer.

She burnt out her freshman year in a SPECTACULAR fashion and has hardly played in public since. It`s a pity really. Her technicality from recordings AMAZES me...but the whole time she was being pushed, she HATED it. Me? I was nurtured thinking I kinda stank sitting 4th to "prodigies" in a top 100 rated music program. Not bad. Low pressure, high fun, and eh, I did end up pretty good and playing for MYSELF and for love. I have her coach me through new pieces now, as she is FREE lessons from someone who has studied under "my personal idols".

Look into your local Youth Symphony and if you google "Jen Cluff" or "Larry Krantz" you should get some great information on the flute and repetoire/practice habits you should start.

Good luck. Flute is my love, but it isn`t my life. I played all four years of college, was the flute soloist and piccolo player..."la prima donna" from my sophomore year on, in the private studio(free lessons!YAY), and NOT even a minor. I found heaven. A small pond, where I could be a big fish. A really quality program that had lost their music major the year before and had a loss of talent with it. Lots of solos, lots of repetoire, the respect of my director(who knew my HS director from grad school! They even shared music and it was a 5 hour drive to school...it weirded me out when I ran into a prof at home for a concert at the HS.)

Now that I`m done with grad school and settled down, I`ve picked the flute back up again after a five year hiatus, I only practice about an hour a day, and I am a bit sad. (but not too sad.) My mentor told me I COULD go pro if I wanted to lock myself for EIGHT hours a day. Nooo. I`m not destined to be in that 1% of performers. I play for me. I master a concerto for ME. So it`s community band for now, and some solo gigs. (Even though I want to THWACK some people for their intonation and posture issues in band.

hey, you sound like me. I practised my little behind off in school, and always did well. Not as well as I wanted, compared to the other flautists I knew, but still well. I even decided to do joint honours music at uni. Then in first year, I decided I hated musicians, would never be a professional (and if I wasn`t going to be proffesional what was the point?) so chucked it and am now very happily strugling towards the last year of my Russian degree. NOT being a musician has been more valuable than any hothousing at the Royal Academy ever would have been. I`ve spent a year living in a foreign country. I`m now very confident in two foreign languages and rapidly picking up a third; I have much better career prospects than I did before, and I get to read books all day and call it work! Now I play very little (hand and jaw problems prevent me from doing any 6 hour stins any more) but enjoy it very much. Maybe one day I`ll sit my ABRSM diploma, but in the meantime I`m happy tootling away and being jealous of everyone who DID make it!
