Ben, if you took photos of embochures of famous, and not so famous, flutists the world over, you would see a variety of shapes, sizes, etc. This is due to the shape and size of the players lips, teeth, etc.

hope that helps a bit.

Yes, what Patrick says is very true. No one has the same embouchure.

Is there a perfect embouchure? No, just different. What one may see as perfect, another one might see completely differently.

Total agreement here.

Just take a look at these photos, and take not of the introduction.

well done Arak, I was thinking of that Roger Stevens book when I commented earlier

I rather look like a blow-fish when I play

I have that book, but it is good that the photos are in the web for ready access.

Personally, I don`t like moustaches, so many of those close-up photos look pretty gruesome.

When I see men like Galway, I often wonder if their beard get`s in the way. It would drive me crazy.

Galway seems to do fine, so I guess it doesn`t.

I played for years with a moustache and a goatee, the problem came when I shaved off the Goatee and the burning that ensued, so if one has a goatee, leave it, or don`t grow it, this is meant for the men in this forum, obviously.

I don`t know Kara, I`m thinking about shaving my goatee, how about you? Maybe I`ll just leave a little wispy bit right under my lip!!!

Playing the flute never burns after I shave!

Sorry, it must be facetious friday for me.

Hee..hee! I have two wiskers that grow right out of my chin. Not enough to grow a goatee. Bummer!
Sometimes I hate getting old.

Sorry Patrick, I was just being silly. I, of course (being female), have never shaved my face, so I wouldn`t have the same experience as you.

I can`t imagine playing with whiskers!
