Actually, with the right touch, Over The Rainbow is wonderful on just about any instrument (except drum set ). I once heard a rendition of it on vibraphone that sent chills down my spine. It`s also nice using a soft touch on trumpet.

Ok I admit that Somewhere Over the Rainbow and My Heart Will Go On are beautiful songs(and I didn`t get a chance to read other replies), but if you want to hear and play the "greatest flute songs" I would personally suggest looking up books and music by classical composers. You`d be surprised how fun and beautiful some peices can be. Out of all of the pieces I`ve played, and I will play in the future, they are truly awesome and preferrably better than Somewhere Over the Rainbow and My Heart Will Go On, which aren`t `flute songs` really. Go search and I`m sure you will find loads of great flute music.

I`m a thirteen year old flutist (been playing for about three years), and I would have to say that Mozart`s concerto in G major is a good one, as is his concerto for flute/harp in C major. I also like Bach`s Sonata II (Allegro-Moderato). Any advice on what piece to play for my Interlochen audition next year? I have a choice between:
-Griffes: "Poem"
-Mozart: "Concerto in G Major" (First movement)
-Bach: "Sonata in G Minor" or "Sonata in C Major"
-Charminade: "Concertino" Op. 107
-Debussy: "Syrinx"
-Faure: "Fantasie" Op. 79
-Ibert: "Concerto" (First movement)
-Prokofiev: "Sonata in D" (First or Third movement)
-Telemann: "Fantasies"
If you have played any of these pieces before and would like to recomend a specific one, please reply!

Faure`s Fantasie is one of my favorites. I think that Chaminade`s Concerto tends to get over played. I know that Poem is very popular, but I don`t care for it much, I find it to contemporary for my taste.
On Faurre`s fantasie, I find that over the years people have started taking the Allegro part faster and faster. I personally like it played at about 132. Anything faster starts to sound like a mess to me.
What about Widor`s Suite or Poulenc Sonate? Are you familiar with them? Good luck to you.

"Has anyone ever heard Danse de la Chevre?"
Yep, I love that peice! Doesn`t it mean dance of the goat or lamb or am I totally off? Well it`s fun and interesting to play. I was introduced to it after playing lots of Bach peices and wanted something different.
Another one of my favorites is Mozart`s Sonata in D major. It`s pretty and fun. When I say fun I mean fast moving sections or light and airy but still beautiful.
Teleman`s Fantasias are great too. My favorite is #3. Has gorgeous slow section then wips into a fast pace dance feel.
There is a band peice called "A movement for Rosa" about Rosa Parks that has a pretty flute solo in the very begining in the low register that I love and play almost everytime I practice, that and Buffy the Vampire Slayer Buffy Angel theme. Anyway back to Rosa peice it`s eith notes in the low register E G then hold out low A. Then quater notes E G then jump to middle eith notes C B half note A then low G and hold. Then half notes low E, low D, F hold. But you play it slow and how you feel. It`s gorgeous.
Oh and not flute peices but I love soundtracks and I got Lord of the Rings Trilogy and it`s all fun and very pretty to play. I like to play rather sad or emotional peices not allways light and airy. Oh and of course I love playing Star War flute books especially the force Theme and that`s sad again too. It`s pathetic with me playing along these movie flute books with the fack synth cds. But in general I like to take movie themes especially and play them even if it`s a short prase. Currently I play themes from Fith Element, Dark Angel, and Buffy. All releatively sad or emotional parts.

"A good flute song is Chorale and Shaker Dance... it is long though... but very fun "
Yeah it is long but that was my favorite band peice when i was in junior high. I liked the flute solos in it to and the duet part round section with the flutes.
