Hi,

I am interested in buying my daughter a new flute. She is in 6th grade and has been playing for since 2nd grade. She is doing really well and is an intermediate player. She is currently using an Armstrng student model and I would like to get her a model that will last her through high school. Her teacher only suggested that she get one with an offset G and gismo key. Which specific models do you recommend under $1700.00? Thanks!!!

How is the model Yamaha YFL-361H?

How is the model Yamaha YFL-361H?

Of no higher quality than the YFL-221.

Solid silver is more important for the body, for durability reason. For the headjoint it`s all in the cut.

All models under the 500 series come with their student cut head with no option to upgrade.

The YFL-361 could be found used for around $500, but may require adjustment to bring it to playability.

The YFL-221 could be found for $150 and below if you scrounge around.

Emerson, Jupiter, and Gemeinhardt offer headjoints with professional cuts for under $1000 new.

Happy hunting.

Since 2nd grade?! Wow!! That`s longer than I`ve been playing...

The new flute will make the tone better, but I have a wonderful tone with a student flute!! The Gizmo key is hardly ever used...according to my private lesson teacher.

I can get a pretty good deal on a new left over solid silver YFL-581. The only downside is that is is the inline G and no gismo key. Is this a good flute??

Find out what the headjoint cut is. Someone could easily swap the Yamaha headjoint with another or took another head not knowing the differencs. The EC is Yamaha`s professional cut.

Of course if the flute is a REAL good deal. That sort of thing could be looked over. What`s the price?

I believe the YFL581 should have a solid silver body. Do make sure it does.

Do keep in mind Yamaha`s current 500 series are silver plated with professional heads while their 400 series are solid silver with student heads... hence the higher cost of the 500 series... that headjoint is worth that much.

The inline G is fine if you have large hands. Since you are buying for a child it could be rather painful unless you added extension to the flute.

If the flute has a B foot it will have a gizmo key. If not, then it doesn`t need one.

Gizmo key just closes the last key on a B foot to get the highest C to ring out since a B foot is too long vs a C foot which is optimal length for that note and doesn`t require a gizmo.

It is new old stock for $1799.00. It is definitely solid silver head and body. It also has the Yamaha EC professional hedajoint.

Oi! That`s no deal!

New Pricing:

http://www.wwandbw.com

Also if you call these places they knock off around $200-300 off the Internet pricing.

Fluteworld also has that same model on sale used for $100 less (which you should still be able to find elsewhere for less).

Looking at fluteworld Jupiter is doing something interesting this year...
Happy Anniversary... Solid Silver 711 with engraved keys for $1200.

Now that`s just cool.

I overlooked that "new" comment. Its a rather old model which can be found used for around $1400 (usual), but it`s gone for as low as $1200 on usedflutes.

If it comes with a new flute warranty and a return period then it`s a good buy, for a Yamaha flute.

Yeah, it`s new with warranty and return period. The new versions of the 5 series professional no longer have solid silver bodies. This is one of the reasons I think that this one is a good deal.

Where can I find the extension and what is it`s official name?

Brannen offers a set of extensions that so that you can try out and return the ones you don`t need. It`s is pricey, but you get refunded the case for the extensions you chose not to keep (they give duplicates in various sizes).

Alternatively extensions can be made by yourself or even some repair people may have experience making them.

I also make them. There is a picture on my site of one of the extensions I made for a flute to make it an off set G. (It was the first one I made, so it doesn`t look as good as my more recent ones that I have made.)
