Hello all,

I am a flute player in a marching/concert band (duh). But next year, I am hoping to expand my abilities as a musician. I am going to get myself in the jazz band playing the harmonica, if possible. (And it`s a professional quality harp, too, 250$!). But at the same time I`ve been thinking that I ought to be able to get into the Jazz band with my flute, too. I have heard Jazz flute and it is pretty cool. So, is there anybody out there who has played Jazz flute before and can give me a hand?

Ooh! Ok, i can`t help, but i could use the help too. I have quite a few jazz pieces, but impro i totally suck at! If anyone could help with that 2 it would be bril!

I don`t know much about jazz flute, except that a lot of it can be played really loosely, and it sounds good 2 kind of slide into a note (like start a little flat and then slide it into tune). listening to jazz flute is a great help!

Wow, I wish I could do that (my band director is evil and refuses to let flutes into the jazz band for some strange reason). Anyways, when I inquired about this elsewhere, I was told that jazz is at least 50% improv. Knowing a little about music theory and chords really helps with that. Thats about the only advice I can give.

well first of all it helps if u alrdy play a jazz instrument it sounds like your doing harmonica but i`m sure ne band director would rather have a jazz flute as a doubler not just as a flute.the only reason i play jazz right now is cuz my main instrument is tenor sax. but if u still gonna go for it make sure u have the right sound. don`t bring in your concert sound to jazz band. learn how to do a very hard *tuh* kind of tounging on your notes that u want emphasis on. lol listen to nestor torres and you`ll get an idea of wat i`m talking about. come in knowing how to improv will help even simple improv will. i`m not sure wat level of a band your in so i`m not sure how good u need to be. i would recommend an abersold. Maiden voyages is a good one. its simple for new players and gives older playeres a chance to see if they can burn through some chord changes u couldn`t do b4 *cough cough autumn leaves* lol trick on the song is your concert Bb scale it works throughout most of the song.
