i am playing this piece tomorrow for a marked performance for my uni course, and marks will be awarded for my presentation and introduction of the piece. i was therefore looking for some interesting facts about it.. such as when did she write it, and what it was inspired by, but i can`t really find much.

the one thing i did find was a story about how she fell in love with a flautist, but he didn`t feel the same and he got engaged to marry another woman, so she wrote this piece as an expression of her love for him and presented it to him on his wedding day, hoping that once he had heard it he would decide to be with her

this story is lovely and fits so well with the mood of the piece but i`m not sure it`s true and i don`t want to look a fool

can anyone help?

I believe it is true, and if it is made up, so what, every piece of great music either tells a story or has a story behind it.

I make my students describe what etude they are working in a poetic way as follows; they have to name the etude, give it a descriptive title, then perhaps describe how the music might be used in a particular scene in a movie
