If you mean that you are having trouble holding the notes steady, it may be that your airstream isn`t consistent and that you don`t have enough air support. Make sure that you are breathing from your diaphragm and using your stomach muscles to hold the air back.

Try doing breathing exercises to help build up your diaghram. Take a look around the internet. There are several very helpful sites that can give you tips or you could ask your band director, instructor, etc. Most importantly, just practice, practice, practice. You`ll get better over time. Good luck to you!

It all comes with time.

Pick a study book series like the Rubank Methods or Trevor Wye`s practice books (The omnibus edition on Amazon is a steal). Plow through them with a metronome and you will find your playing with improve... over time.

There are cheats for fast embouchure development by using breathing devices, harmony flutes (piccolo/alto), or jugs/bottles... but time will help you more.

Some odd, but kinda fun things to do is try to get an empty 1 gallon wide mouth arrowhead bottle to resonate, get film caisters or pill bottles to whistle, or pop off hamonics on pop bottles. All add to you embouchures memory on how to get things to sound and to control your air and be aware of resistance.

You don`t need all of those special items that are supposed to increase your support. You just need to practice. It`s hard for all beginners to get out the high notes so practice them everyday. Then once you have a high range on the flute start working on serious breath support. I would try the old fashion Trevor Wye books or Moyse.

I actually used to find my teacher`s technique of making me hold my case against the wall with my stomach (!) really useful for determining exactly which muscles to use and how. Aides can help- there`s no point practising and reinforcing bad practise.
