What would you do? You could come online to 8notes.com!

Re: "Our societies are getting increasingly crazy and Internet plays a big role in this. It remains to know if the balance of this role is positive or negative."

I don`t think it`s a question of whether the good outweighs the bad. I think it`s a question, rather, of what exactly are the concomitant insidious consequences of a new technology into which we`ve blindly plunged headlong. The vast majority of Internet users are not merely oblivious; they are in severe denial.

As for kara "leaving", this ain`t no place. Post or don`t post as you see fit when you see fit. I`m sorry, but I have to consider the absurdity of this thread a case in point.

1. This isn`t about someone `leaving`, this is about "kara the person", not "somebody leaving".

2. Where`s your sense of community?

When a man`s an empty kettle
He should be on his mettle
And yet I`m torn apart
Just because I`m presumin`
That I could be kind of human
If I only had a heart

I`d be tender, I`d be gentle
And awful sentimental
Regarding love and art
I`d be friends with the sparrows
And the boy that shoots the arrows
If I only had a heart

How many different opinions and approaches to a problem of feelings!

I agree with Scotch that we all have (more or less) plunged blindly headlong in this (Internet) new technology. We had no choice, or had we?

But I don`t see the "denial" that Scotch attributes to a vast majority of us, surfers or users or just by passers.

My specific comment on the increasing craziness of western societies and the role of Internet probably was made at the wrong place.

It`s true it had not much to do with the subject of this thread. I was commenting on other`s reply and unfortunately I share with many, the habit of linking ideas and quickly moving away form the original one. Sorry for that.

Having say this,

This particular thread was started in a moment of sadness and since then it has quickly evolved into a beautiful showcase of positive feelings. The flute itself is not much involved, but we are humans first, then artists, musicians or students or whatever.

It has received so far 37 posts and this speaks well of all those who participated. First time also that I see beautiful poetry in a rather technical Forum. Good sign, in my opinion.

I always try to be moderate, but this time I strongly disagree with Scotch aa I must say that this thread, started by Kara at a difficult moment, (one directly related with the Forum activity and frequent lack of Nettiquette), cannot be considered as "ain`t no place" or " a case in point for the absurdity of starting and posting in this thread".

She was hurt here, she made it known to the list (an she was brave in this sense) and here is the place to receive the support she needed and that we all need in life, sooner or later.

What would be the place, if not? All those that answered and commented, and I`m sure also Scotch, have a certain feeling of "belonging" to this virtual community. This is nice and positive. That`s why we all come back, again and again.

And this is our place, among many others.

Sorry, Scotch, those comments were a little bit too strong and, again (seems this happens to many), in the wrong place...

The "poem" is the song that the Tinman sings in the Wizard of Oz! My son sings it all the time as he`s working around the house/yard/car.
We just sang it as a duet when I read the post......another mom-son moment....

Kara. Degree is important I think if your are getting employment in some symphony orchestra or teaching classes perhaps. However, you said that you are a pro and as a pro I don't doubt your confidence to deal with this degree-stuff. I have known a person who had a university training and she specializes in flute. But when I hear her play, it seems that I am listening to a mechanical player. Like an electronic piano with pre-programmed pieces. There are no feelings, and the color which she so painstakingly apply still sounds feeling-less, more like comes from an expensive flute she's playing.

I have no degree in music, I am self-taught and I play the flute because it gives me a very pleasant feeling, a far far more pleasant feeling than receiving a magna cum laude medal. And in my opinion, the true measure of one's level of expertise does not lie in degree alone but in the way you convince yourself and your listener that you are an expert in your field.

Personally, I would take my hat off to a pro player that has no university training than the one with a music degree. It is like two mountain climbers, one with safety gears and the other without. When both reach their destination, they are both successful but which one do you think is more skillful?

Kara, I think what she wrote is very nice, as I keep saying on this forum, I rarely have the average concert goer ask me about my "degree", or who I studied with, or what cut I have on my embouchure hole, or what scale I play, or what serial # Haynes I have, they just enjoy the music, hopefully, that's all that I care about
