"OH, but that one guy..uhh..james walter came to our school. He was good^^..wish i heard more flutists.."

I think you are talking about James (Jimmy) Walker energetic shorter guy w a beard. He's a really good one to have on your list of people that you've heard
He's into jazz some but is really cranking out sound tracks for movies out in California. A very impressive player. Doing those soundtracks requires a very good, expessive tone control and a person who gets the music right with little practice. He also plays a wide variety of types of flutes fairly well. Read: He's good with the fingerings of the Irish, japanese, recorders, ocarinas, bass flutes and whistles.

Patrick
There's a cat out in Boston area that plays Baroque named Christopher Krieger. I heard he was very impressive on the Bach sonatas. I would like to get a hold of a recording of him but not sure it's available. That early music genre is another world of flute playing altogether.

Galway bright? To me he has always sounded more on the darker sound.

Everyone has differing tastes and certainly hears things different. I find Rampal has a lovely warm and sweet tone. Rampal has some interesting recordings... some are absolutley amazing and some are rather ho-hum... some should not have been released!

I find Galways tone to be very dark in recordings. Though I didn't think so at his concert.

I own this CD, very inexpensive and often beautiful

I found clips of that Rampal album on amazon...
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000001VHZ/sr=8-4/qid=1143958042/ref=sr_1_4/103-0097063-4847020?%5Fencoding=UTF8

Apparently I like Rampal of the early 90's!

Like these:

Romantic Concertos (Wonderful!)
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000005E93/sr=8-12/qid=1143958042/ref=sr_1_12/103-0097063-4847020?%5Fencoding=UTF8

Greatests Hits Flute (Mostly Rampal)
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000002AVM/sr=8-3/qid=1143958872/ref=sr_1_3/103-0097063-4847020?%5Fencoding=UTF8

La Flute Enchantée (the harpsichord stuff is recorded weird, but everything else is good)
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000002ST6/sr=8-12/qid=1143959123/ref=sr_1_12/103-0097063-4847020?%5Fencoding=UTF8

Rampal's "The Art of Flute" is a bad release which is just noise and fuzz that needed good editing (not on Amazon)

I like the two Mozart Quintets I have of Rampal, but I don't like the couple Mozart concerto's that I have of him (Art of Flute) and (Mozart's Concerto's with Harp).

The Flute Quartets, K. 285 · K. 285a · K. 285b · 295
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0000026FT/sr=8-1/qid=1143959356/ref=sr_1_1/103-0097063-4847020?%5Fencoding=UTF8

and Flute Quartet album with K285, 285a, 285a, 298 (not on Amazon).

Hmm... it could be that I'm partial to some oboe recordings that Rampal played in that album. Some pieces you just have a liking for on specific instruments... and sometimes certain performer's renditions.

"Galway bright? To me he has always sounded more on the darker sound. "

I would say bright generally Kara. As a matter of fact he may be the biggest leader in the cause for the larger embouchure hole movement in tonal style. He plays with a smile on his face and in his tone.
As another point he playes on the high side of the pitch when doing vibrato. That is to say that he tunes the note and vibrates sharp from there.
This page is very interesting:
http://homepage.mac.com/johnwion/vibrato.html

Listen to Galway's vibrato link on the piece and then listen to the slowed down version.

For the Mozart Quartets, I have the WIBB version and it's like a great recording for waking up in the morning.

You don't think it could be the fact that he is tuning on the A=442 scale and not the American scale do you? Those 2 MHz could be very misleading.

To Stephen, actually some of those Rampal recordings issued in the 90's were actually recorded in the 70's when he was still in his prime.

I agree that Galway is bright in general, that high european tuning me thinks.

If I could ask Galway one question it would be;

Can you put a little tone on that edge?

I don't think so, if you listen to the slow motion version on that link, his playing high is in relation to the other pitches. Not relevant to any A= tuning.

schoolgirl0125,
Also listen To Mimi Stillman if you can. She's somewhere around 24 and is exceptional. She started flute at age 6.

http://flutewise.com/fw/mimi-bio.html
"At 12, Ms. Stillman was the youngest wind player ever admitted to the Curtis Institute of Music, where she studied with Julius Baker and Jeffrey Khaner and received her Bachelor of Music degree in 1999."

I don't know as many flutists as I would like, or their work as well as I would like, but I'll put my two cents in anyway. These are the two flutist who got me playing the flute in the first place.
Ian Anderson (he of Jethro Tull), who may not have the best technique in the world for all I know, but who is the first player that made me go "wow what a cool instrument.
And Jed Wentz, an American traverso player based in Amsterdam,(also leader of the Musica ad Rhenum baroque ensemble) whose recording of Vivaldi's Flute Concerto in D Major RV428 (specifically the second movement) made me decide that this was really something I wanted to do.
